The daily driver that works in everything.

The Thick Lizzy is Ryan Lovelace's tri-plane hull mini-glider—originally shaped for Trevor Gordon, now one of the most sought-after one-board-quiver designs coming out of Santa Barbara. It rides high, gets on plane fast, and holds when it steepens. The tri-plane hull channels water along three flat planes under the nose into double concave through the tail, creating lift and speed without sacrificing rail-to-rail response.

Design Details

The bottom contour is what sets the Thick Lizzy apart. The tri-plane hull—three flat panels meeting at soft chines under the front third of the board—generates speed in weak surf the way a flat hull does, but transitions into double concave through the tail so you keep that speed when you engage a rail. The 70/30 down rails carry enough volume to float through dead sections while still biting when you weight them on a wall.

At 7'8", this sits in the "Middle Lizzy" sweet spot between the shorter Little Lizzy (under 7') and the Big Lizzy (8'+). Lively enough to snap off the top, enough glide to make something out of nothing on a two-foot day.

How It Rides

Fast through flat sections. Responsive when walls stand up. The tri-plane hull feels different under your feet than a standard single concave—there's a directional pull forward that rewards staying centered and trimming high. It paddles like a bigger board and surfs like a smaller one. Most people ride this 4-6 inches shorter than their typical mid-length.

The Shaper

Ryan Lovelace is a self-taught shaper out of Carpinteria, just south of Santa Barbara. Back-to-back Shaper of the Year (Board Retailers Association), known for his flower inlay designs and for building boards that are genuinely different—not nostalgia shapes and not performance shortboard derivatives. Pemulis has a direct relationship with Ryan's shop and keeps Thick Lizzys and Lovemachines in stock.
